sometimes when i read GMHHAY, i feel satisfied by proxy by your productivity. i spent the weekend fiddling with this new crochet project that may end up driving me bonkers or ruining my hands.

sometimes when i read GMHHAY, i evaluate my own routines. i have a newish one. i do “turn down service” about an hour before i go to bed. this involves putting on my pajamas, turning on my hatch alarm, plugging in my phone and prepping my bed. the latter (does one still use latter and former with more than two items?) allows me to make my bed all fancy in the morning and not worry about how annoying it will be to get into bed. i also think this routine sends a signal to my brain that it’s time to wind down.

Oh wow that is a great habit. I approve. Do you move a bunch of fancy pillows to, like, a bench or something?

i have one “fancy” pillow. it’s one of those long lumbar pillows. it’s not really fancy at all. i made it myself and it’s stuffed with cheap poly-fil. the labor intensive aspect of the turn down service is arranging the duvet that is folded in half or thirds at the end of my bed, exposing my neatly tucked gauzey blanket and crisp sheets.

Good morning, so bright and early! I learned recently that cardboard makes great brown matter in the compost. Are you using the shredded cardboard in your compost?

Oh I do yes I do. So much cardboard. I have a lovely shredder and I compost it, and i use it in all my beds as much. I don't use it on the ground directly, though. That seems a bridge too far. But it's great in compost. And free! Only brown cardboard, no colored inks, no labels, no gloss.

That is great to hear. A shredder would certainly take the tedium out of this ample supply of brown matter in composting. I read that almost all ink in cardboard and paper packaging is now soy-based, and is therefore, safe in composting. This would be awesome if this is true.
