Good morning. Hello. How are you? #793
Short movie reviews in lieu of a normal GMHHAY cuz I'm sick
Good morning. Hello, there. How are you? Happy intereggenum week. Just plugging along here. All good. Was positive again today but I am feeling it. This evening or tomorrow, I’m gonna be negative, just you watch. Power of positive thinking and all that. Slept nine and a half hours last night. I could get used to this. Jane, please learn to get up on your own and make breakfast and get ready for school on your own while your parnets sleep k thanks.
Got a brief ten minutes or so outside at the playset with my wife and daughter and it was so nice to see them, but so sad I couldn’t hug them or kiss them I just had to sit over on this bench with a mask on.
New York I love you but that trip was not worth this.
Watched three movies yesterday. I cannot claim to be having a lot of brilliant thoughts this week, so I will confine myself to three short film reviews today and a mix:
Bullet Train: Lotta mixed reviews on this one and they are all kind of right. It is nothigng ground breaking but it is funny and I like the actors and it’s got some spirit. it is waaaaay too long for no good reason, and there is an obvious stopping point about 40 minutes before the end where they shoulda wrapped it up. But it was fun and I appreciate a fun movie right now.
Decision to Leave: Maybe the best movie I’ve seen this week, it really was great. Bit hard to follow in my muddled state and subtitles on very quick dialog, but I soon adapted. Korean crime drama. Really enjoyed it. Beautiful, clever. So many of the films I’ve been watching this week have been some sort of mystery — Glass Onion, Amsterdam, Bullet Train, this one. This one was the best. Beautifully shot, beautifully edited. It was long but I don’t know if I would have cut anything. Which is weird cuz actually there’s a natural stopping point about halfway through the film where it could have ended and still been a near-perfect film and when it wasn’t stopping I thought “what on earth can this film do to justify keeping going” but it pulled it off. Also check out this sweet neck massager the cops use in their car during stakeouts I want one of these so bad:
Aftersun: Okay when you’re locked away from your daughter maybe don’t watch a film about the strained relationship between a man and his daughter. But props for being short, Aftersun. And beautiful, contemplative, a bit experimental. Maybe a bit too experimental for me in this day and age I want to know concretely what the hell was going on with the club scene I do not understand, I am old, spell it out for me or at least have Eric Voss do an explainer video for it. Man that would be hilarious if there were a New Rockstars for indie and A24 films. But yeah this was good definitely deserves the hype.
Think I’m gonna do After Yang and the Woman King today. Running out of new-ish films available to me on streaming and Plex. Lots I want to watch but not available to me in my Hobbit hole, alas. White Noise on Friday. If you have any recommendations, send em my way.
Have a goth mix today. Mostly old classics but a few new gems and I tried to mix up which old classics.
Until tomorrow, or the next day or something. These really are taking a lot out of me this week. But movie reviews, I can probably keep doing that.
