Good morning. Hello. How are you? #654
Good morning. Hello. How are you today? I am sorry I didn’t write this morning. I was up, I just… couldn’t. I was a bit hung over from seeing friends, amazing friends, the night before. Jane was up already, chirping away in her “bedroom.” I had to do some slides for a client meeting.
But I could have pulled it off were it not for Uvalde. Because what is there even to say about another school shooting in America. I had hoped to find some shred of hope, some plan of action on which I could plausibly hang an essay. But it did not come. It is not going to come.
I remember, long ago, after some mass shooting, someone on Twitter posted the cris de couer that is on all of our tongues: how hopeless it all feels, how it feels like there’s nothing we can do. And someone — I believe it was Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action — posted something monumentally uplifting. She said, essentially, that progress was being made every day, and she listed all of the good local bills that have been passed, all of the bad local bills that have been blocked, progress in the courts. It helped me so much. So much.
So I was looking for something like that after Uvalde, but… nope. Nothing. No one has it in them anymore to rally the troops. No one has it in them to give us any hope.
We all know that no matter how many people want sane gun control laws, gerrymandering, propaganda and the complete bullshit that is the US Senate will keep them from getting passed.
We all know the courts would over turn any law that was passed.
We all know that the constitution is supposed to be a living document, and it can be changed, and even if a bunch of death cult worshippers have locked down their psychotic interpretation of it, we could theoretically change it through the amendment process but lol, nope, no one will ever pull that off.
Did you know Texas has a law saying a bank can’t participate in the state’s bond offerings if that bank is insufficiently pro-gun? A few banks didn’t make the cut — JP Morgan, Bank of America — but they just rolled over and took it. Did any bank say “well okay Texas, we will leave your state completely.” Lol big nope.
There were two cops standing outside the school in Uvalde. The shooter shot them and moved on. They were both “lightly wounded” and that was the end of their role in all of this. Maybe they were confused by the shooter crashing his truck into a barricade, and they thought it was an accident. Whatever the reason, once again, a “good guy with a gun” — two of them, in fact — didn’t have any effect. “Good guy with a gun” is a myth.
We all know that there are still millions of people who vote for Republicans even as their kids are put at risk in school every day because taxes.
We all know that not enough people pay attention to the mid-terms. It is fucking insane that the Republicans are supposedly about to take over the House and Senate even as they continue to legislate in complete defiance of the majority.
God. If there is one thing, that is it. Stop being bad about the mid-terms. The mid-terms fucking matter, they matter so much. The senate, the courts, they all hang in the balance this November and millions of well-meaning, very liberal Democrats just can’t be bothered. I get embarrassed even talking about them with my friends and I hate that. I hate that it’s uncool to talk about the issues that chew me up inside.
Everyone donate in the midterms! Everyone! Donate in the PA Senate race and the NC Senate race and the GA Senate race. The OH Senate.
You know what the NRA does? You know what Republicans do? Care about the mid-terms.
Winning the mid-terms means a confirmed ATF Director that isn’t watered down thanks to Joe fucking Manchin.
Just two more senate seats and we could overturn this stupid-ass law protecting gun manufacturers from lawsuits. Imagine what we could do if we could use the same tools we used against the cigarette industry. They know it, that’s why they passed this law, that’s why they vote in the fucking mid-terms.
Yes American democracy is fake. Yes the Democrats didn’t do enough last time they had enough votes to do things. You still gotta care about the fucking mid-terms.
Money isn’t enough. But it’s not nothing.
