Good morning. Hello. How are you? #1039
German school mornings, security tabletop as work DnD, Walmart Chic, Jane and the medicine, Chores, Greenhouse!
Good morning! Hello. How are you? What is up. Monday Monday nah nah nah. So good to me. Monday Monday nah nah all I hoped it would be. Have I pulled that gag before in GMHHAY? God, I don’t remember. I have done so many of these. Every one of them probably just rehashes the same things. We’re just meat bags with bicycles for minds but jokes on us, they’re stationary bikes.
Interesting reader comment about the BS that s the authoritarian dropoff situation at schools. Anne writes:
Could just be American uptightness? I lived in Germany as a 4th grader, and they had exactly the system you just dreamed up. We got there at about 8:30, but there was recess for like an hour while everyone trickled in. It was amazing, just this huge bonkers recess when all the kids are FULL of energy. We got up to a lot of hijinks, and I ended up in the principal's office a few times because I didn't speak the language very well and never quite knew when to switch from "crazy playground" to "quiet getting in line."
What! Come on, Man! You mean people in this world don’t have to deal with this? That is amazing. I am glad I’m not the crazy one here. I am going to run for school board on this issue. N.B. I am not actually going to run for school board.
The security tabletop exercise at work was a great time but there were not dice involved, that made me a little sad. It’s sort of a dilemma, these exercises. Because there were no dice making things random, I pretty quickly sussed out that this was going to be a very bad security event, which caused me, as CEO, to escalate things more quickly than I would in reality, wherein reality things wouldn’t necessarily be the absolute worst. It was fine, team did great anyway, but part of me thinks it should have dice, and the incidents should range from minor to horrific, more like a DnD campaign. Of course, then if you only did them once a year it wouldn’t be enough, especially if you only got a minor event that year. But if you did them more often, like monthly, you would probably uncover some completely random minor shit that’s lurking. Plus it would be more fun. Like every last Friday of the month you get “Tech DnD” with your coworkers? I would be down for that. Will discuss with CSO.
Lovely weekend of CHORES CHORES CHORES. Two trips to Walmart. During one of them they were playing ‘Dance Dance Dance (Yowza Yowza) by Chic. Except Wikipedia tells me it is spelled “Yowsah.” Damn. Who knew. Not something you usually hear at Walmart because, you know. Disco. 70’s. Black people. Gay people. Someone at Walmart radio is being subversive.
After the tabletop exercise, I did the grocery shopping and recycling and then I went to Lowe’s hardware to buy wood to get this record crate building project going. I am building new record crates because they stopped making mine and I need more to match. It went mostly well but I could not find any cheap 1/4” pine, everything is thicker and I don’t want to have to split it because it needs to be 3” wide and that is too tall for the table saw and I don’t have a band saw so what I am saying is I need a band saw. But i did not buy one, I bought the expensive wood instead and, seriously, it was almost as expensive as a band saw.
Then I did a learning run with Emma to pick Jane up from school cuz Emma is going to Boston Wednesday and Janet is sick so I might be picking Jane up as well as dropping her off and it’s a completely different, complex, convoluted system that takes about an hour. Awesome.
Emma’s been going straight to bed after Jane bedtime, because she’s sick, so Friday night I took an edible and watched log splitting videos and it was the greatest night. My log splitter should be here next week. I am absolutely vibrating with excitement about it. You are gonna hear so much about my log splitter.
Then I went through my Youtube subscriptions one by one and looked to see if there were any videos I missed. I probably subscribe to like 200 Youtube channels. It really was something scrolling through them all. Made me realize how many people have just given up on Youtube. Miss you, Mike Gill. I texted my friend Jen a screenshot of her Youtube channel with one video from ten years ago. But also lots of actual professional Youtubers just… disappear. Really makes you wonder.
Saturday I spent the morning with Jane playing “balloon” which was two hours of batting a balloon back and forth and was simultaneously preposterously boring and the absolute best, most rewarding possible use of my time. I like Jane, she is my little friend. I yelled at her Wednesday about her massive resistance to her medicine (one more day, please, god, let’s get through it) and we are still recovering. We talk about it every day. Like it’s so weird. It does not impact our time together, she still hugs me and tells me she loves me and we play games and are happy. But she makes comments about it and we have to talk about it every day and it is mortifying and embarrassing and I feel awful. It’s a different sort of reconciliation than with adults, where you both pout for a while then talk it out then its (mostly) done. You are always over and it and not over it simultaneously. The last time I showed my temper was maybe eight months ago, I was annoyed with a burrito that was prepared incorrectly and threw it in the sink in annoyance and mild rage and my god she talked about it for like three months. So this is going to take a while. It is… rough.
Then I went over to the new house with the intention of getting started on the record crates, but the place was an absolute mess. So I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned the garage shop, which has been getting super insanely disorganized since I dumbed all the gardening shit in there last weekend. Workbench just covered in shit, multiple bins with the same stuff in it, etc. etc. I spent a good four hours organizing and man it was so satisfying and everything is clean and organized except I need a wood wall rack.
Saturday night, same thing, Emma sick, me alone, so I took another edible and watched the Slift KEXP performance and it ruled so hard. Then I watched that HBO cartoon Scavenger’s Reign and it is beautiful and unique and weird and trippy.
And then! Sunday! Greenhouse day! All day, 8-4. Me, Ricardo, and the other Ricardo and crew. We made a ton of progress. Not done, probably one more day, but the frame is up in its entirety and you can now see exactly what I’m going for here. Look at this!
It is going to be so amazing. I am so excited. You can’t really see the goth crenelations along the top yet, and the spires and roundels aren’t on, but it’s really coming along.
I would like to salute my wife for getting Jane to take her medicine this morning and Jane for getting to school on time. What a gift to have a morning that actually worked as intended.
Here’s a mix for you of mostly (all?) new stuff, mostly new acts, and it is awesome this is a great mix I promise. Check it out.
Until tomorrow, friends.
